Delbert Raymond Matt, age 96, of Garnavillo, IA, died Thursday, July 30, 2009, at the Guttenberg Care Center. He was born the son of Alex and Mary (Eggerth) Matt on March 12, 1913 on the family farm in rural Garber.
Delbert received his education from the local country school and farmed with his brother for the majority of his life. After his brother Laurence passed in 1996, Delbert moved to Garnavillo where he lived up until the last 2 years, which he spent at the Guttenberg Care Center. Farming consumed most of Delbert’s time but he did make time to spend in his garden. He was a fantastic harmonica player and enjoyed a good joke occasionally.
Delbert is survived by two nieces, Lois (Harold A.) Mueller of Garnavillo and Mary Schaefers of Volga; two nephews, Gregory (Marjorie) Schaefers of Center Point IA and Lavern (Connie) Schaefers of Wadena; one niece in law, Pearl Schaefers of Guttenberg and many great nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Leona Schaefers and 2 in infancy; one brother Laurence Matt and one nephew Francis Schaefers.
