Valmah “Val” H. Brandt was born the son of Louis H. and Amanda (Matt) Brandt, January 17, 1912, on the family farm near Garnavillo. He died Tuesday, February 17, 2009, at Windsor Nursing Center in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
Val graduated from Garnavillo High School, attended Iowa State University and owned and operated the Garnavillo Mill-Brandt Brothers for 55 years. On January 17, 1938, he married Ivy Cocking in Earlville, Iowa. He enjoyed his work, visiting the Colorado Rocky Mountains, and woodworking.
Survivors include his two daughters, Ruth (Bill) Cairns of Fairview Park, Ohio and Lois (Brandt) Asche of Parkersburg; two sons, Dr. Larry (Diana) Brandt of Parkersburg and Dale (Myriam) Brandt of Garnavillo; two sisters, Alice Gould of Culver, Indiana and Helene (Grant) Zedicher of Minneapolis, Minnesota; one brother, Lloyd (Lois) Brandt of Minneapolis, Minnesota; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Ivy, and one brother, Robert.
