William (Bill) G. Berns, 64 of Guttenberg, passed away January 1, 2009 at his home following a sudden illness. Bill was born January 27, 1944 to Wilfred and Jeanette (Kann) Berns. He graduated from St. Mary’s High School, attended the University of Iowa, and graduated from the University of Montana with a Bachelor of Science degree in Wildlife Technology. Bill was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1967 and served as a radar operator in Korea. Bill recently retired from John Deere Dubuque Works after 36 years of employment. Bill enjoyed the river and commercial fished for many years. He also enjoyed reading and spending time with his granddaughter. Bill is survived by his three children, Christopher (Stephanie) Berns of Independence, Chad Berns of Guttenberg, and Jennifer Berns of Cedar Rapids; one granddaughter, Carmen Berns of Independence; mother, Jeanette Berns of Guttenberg; and two sisters, Joyce (Bob) Hyde and Jean (Terry) Green, both of Guttenberg;. Bill was preceded in death by his father.
