Irene Matilda Rosetta (Handke) Schroeder was born the daughter of Harry and Amanda (Sadewasser) Handke, March 13, 1913, near Osterdock. She died Sunday, August 24, 2008, at Guttenberg Municipal Hospital.
Irene received her education locally. On March 12, 1932, she was united in marriage with Clarence Schroeder in Galena, Illinois. Irene farmed with her family and was homemaker for many years.
She was a member of St. John’s Ladies Aid and Mt. Harmony Cemetery Association. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, baking, and spending time with family.
Survivors include two daughters, Lavonne (Edward) Rodenberg of Guttenberg and Myrna Backes of Guttenberg; four sons, Hermie (Janet) Schroeder of Garber, Lyle (Hollis) Schroeder of Garber, Gary (Jennifer) Schroeder of Garber, and Dennis Schroeder of McGregor; seventeen grandchildren, thirty-seven, great-grandchildren; seven, great great-granchildren, one brother, Arthur Handke of Littleport; one son-in-law, Alfred Bahls of LaCrescent, Minn. and one brother-in-law, Don Dodge of Edgewood.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Clarence; daughter, Darlene Bahls; two brothers, Chester and Ervin; three sisters, Loraine Miller, Marie Pensel, and Lucille Dodge; and son-in-law, Harlan Backes.
